Project: Refurbishment of a 1970’s apartment block in Carnegie (external walkways and main staircase).
Brief: To provide a waterproof, coloured, non-slip, UV-stable coating to the walkways that was also trafficable.
Hurdles: The major hurdles for this project were time constraints, weather conditions and owner/tenant access, as these walkways and staircase were the only way they could access the upper apartments.
NWIF scope of works:
* The epoxy primer was always going to be a challenge, as the average temperature during this project was only 15 degrees Celsius, and the work was being done outdoors. We contacted a number of resin suppliers, and Wagon Paints’ RAPID epoxy resin was our only choice. All the tenants in the upper level were notified. The epoxy primer was applied and dry within 6 hours, thus allowing the owners/tenants access to their apartments that same evening.
* The polyurethane system was chosen for its UV stability. This solvent based polyurethane had a setting time of approximately 2-4 hours, thus causing minimal disruption to the owners/tenants.
